Isaiah 52 - Get Ready to Meet the Lord

Translation and Sermon by Nate Wilson for Christ the Redeemer Church, Manhattan, KS, 09 Dec 2007

Translation

1. Awake, awake! Put on your strength, Zion!

Put on your garments of splendor, Jerusalem, City of the Holy One!

2. Shake yourself, arise from the dust, be seated, Jerusalem.

Let the bonds of your neck be unlocked, captive daughter of Zion!

3. For thus says Jehovah,

“Gratuitously you were sold, and it will not be with silver that you are redeemed.”

4. For thus says the Lord Jehovah,

“To Egypt my people went down in the beginning to lodge there,

and Assyria, with a cessation, oppressed them.

5. But now, what have I here?” declares Jehovah,

“for my people were taken gratuitously, their rulers howl (with laughter),”

declares Jehovah, “and all the day long my name is blasphemed.

6. Therefore my people will know

my name;

therefore, in that day,

that I am He, the One speaking. Look at me!

7. How fitting are the feet of an announcer upon the mountains,

causing peace to be heard,

announcing goodness,

causing salvation to be heard,

saying to Zion, your God reigns!

8. A voice! Your watchmen lifted up the voice; together they cheered,

for eye with eye they watched while Jehovah restored Zion!

9. Burst out! Cheer together, dry places of Jerusalem,

for Jehovah has comforted His people;

He has redeemed Jerusalem!

10. Jehovah has bared the arm of His holiness before the eyes of all the nations,

and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God!

11. Turn away! Turn away; go out from there.

Do not touch uncleanliness. Go out from the midst of her.

Purify yourselves, bearers of the vessels of Jehovah.

12. For it will not be in haste that y’all go out, and you will not proceed by fleeing,

for Jehovah will proceed before your face, and the God of Israel will be your sweep-man.

13. Look, my Servant will act prudently;

He will be high, and lifted up, and greatly exalted,

14. as when many were astonished over You,

so disfigured from man was His appearance, and His form from the sons of man,

15. so He will sprinkle many nations.

Over Him Kings will draw their mouths shut,

for what had not been recorded for them they see,

and what they had not heard, they understand for themselves.

Introduction

One of the problems we encountered while renting houses to live in was that the owner would always decide to sell the house out from under us. This left us in the awkward position of having to facilitate house showings to potential buyers when we did not want to have to move out of the house we were renting. When we would get another phone call from a realtor asking to show the house at a certain time, we always struggled with what we should do to prepare for the potential buyer’s viewing of the house. Josh got the phone call on one such occasion: Can you be ready to show the house in 10 minutes? Mr. Shade wants to see it. Uh oh. Mr. Shade was the former Marine who coached Josh’s soccer games. He’d be a stickler for details. And neither Mom nor Dad were home; he’d have to get it ready with his younger brothers and sisters. Keeping the little kids busy in the back bedrooms and frantically picking up the toys from the living room, Josh barely had time to mop the kitchen floor before the Shades arrived. And no, they didn’t buy the house, but Josh was ready.

Isaiah 52 was written to prepare the people of God for the arrival of a much more important personage than Mr. Shade. Isaiah was writing to prepare the Jews for the arrival of Jesus, the Son of God. Would they be ready for Him?

From our vantage point in history, Jesus has already come and gone, but we anticipate His coming again. What did Isaiah call the people of God to do in preparation for the coming of Jesus, and how can we likewise prepare for His second coming?

How to get ready

Following end of God’s wrath poured out on His people from ch. 51
51:17 Wake yourself up! Wake yourself; stand up, Jerusalem, which drank from the hand of Jehovah the cup of his wrath. You drank - you drained - the goblet cup of the trembling.

She has been lying on the ground drunk from the suffering she has received from God as the consequence of her rebellion against Him. She is called to get up off the ground, shake off the dust, and sit in a seat, which indicate receiving honor. (ILLUSTRATION: The honor I received of getting a plastic lawn chair at a church in Uganda rather than a wooden bench without a back.)

What is it that God’s people are called to dress themselves in? Jesus has plans for what He wants his bride to look like.

Stop trying to adorn yourself with filthy rags and the wrong things:
3:17. therefore the Lord will scab the scalp of the daughters of Zion… 18. In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; 19. the ear-rings, the bracelets, and the scarves; 20. the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the scent bottles, and the amulets; 21. the signet rings and nose rings; 22. the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; 23. the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils…

“Put on your beautiful garments, your state robes” – your priestly and royal uniform.

How do we wear our strength/beauty holiness? We are to put on Christ:

·         28:3 The proud crown of the alcoholics of Ephraim will be trodden underfoot. 4 And the fading flower of the beauty of his gory which is upon the head of the valley of riches will be like a ripe fig before summer which as soon as the see-er sees it, it is in his hand and he swallows it. 5 In that day Jehovah of Hosts will turn into the crown of beauty and into the diadem of glory for the remnant of His people,

·         Romans 13:12-14  The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.  13  Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.  14  But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

·         Ephesians 6:13 “…put on the full armor of God… so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.  14  Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,  15  and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace…”

·         Colossians 3:10-14  and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him--  11  a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all.  12  So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;  13  bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.  14  Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

We are also to put off something in order to get ready
v.1
- Don’t let the uncircumcised and unclean come in.
ILLUSTRATION of mechanics of malaria and its prevention as allegory of sin.
Don’t allow known carriers of the disease of sin to plant evil in you.
You can’t avoid sinners, but you can sleep in your mosquito netting, wear insecticide, and take your antimalarial pills! Having a prayer closet is like your mosquito net, a place where you can retreat and get things straight with God. Spending time with Christian friends can be like insect repellant – you are the aroma of death to those who hate God. And reading the Bible is like taking antimalarial pills. God’s word kills lies on contact, so keep taking in God’s word!

Loose bonds by believing God’s word instead of being rebellious
48:4. …you are obstinate and your neck is an iron sinew
28:22 And now, don’t you scoff! Otherwise your bonds will become strong. For I have heard from my Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, it is complete and decided over all the land. 23 Give ear and listen to my voice; pay attention and listen to my speech:

It’s important to put off the sin in our own life
Isaiah 58:6-10
"Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free And break every yoke?  7  Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into the house; when you see the naked, to cover him; and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?  8  Then your light will break out like the dawn, and your recovery will speedily spring forth; and your righteousness will go before you; the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.  9  Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; You will cry, and He will say, 'Here I am.' If you remove the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger and speaking wickedness,  10  And if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom will become like midday.”

But ultimately, this freedom comes from God
49:25
For thus says Jehovah, “Even the captives of the mighty will be taken and the prey of the ruthless one will be rescued, and I myself will fight against those who fight against you, and I myself will cause to save your children

Revelation 21:1-27  Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.  2  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.  3  And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them,  4  and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away…  25  In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed;  26  and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it;  27  and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Why get ready? Because they were under the bondage of sin.

3. For thus says Jehovah,

“Gratuitously you were sold/for nothing, and it will not be with silver that you are redeemed.”

6. Therefore my people will know my name;

therefore, in that day, that I am He, the One speaking. Look at me!

Matthew 3:1-8  In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,  2  "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."  3  For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.'" … 5  Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him,  6  and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.  7  But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?  8  Bear fruit in keeping with repentance…”

Why did Isaiah write his book? Why did John baptize? Because the people of God were given to sin. God, through Isaiah, speaks of “selling” His people in v.3 when He had not in fact sold them; they had sold themselves into slavery for free! God’s ultimate ownership of His people had never changed. When He asks, “What have I here?” in v. 5, the answer is that God still has Israel in His posession. Inasmuch as their sin enslaved them, the righteousness of one of their own would redeem them - the righteousness of Jesus.

Jeremiah 15:13-14  "Your wealth and your treasures I will give as spoil, without price, for all your sins, throughout all your territory.  14  I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever."

Romans 7:14  For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin.

The sense of the grammatical structure in vs. 3-6 is that as a result of allowing His people to be oppressed by foreigners – Egypt, Assyria, and (in v.5) Babylon, God’s people would be prepared to receive Him. Thus (v.6) “my people will know my name.”

By the way:

·         The word translated “nothing” beside the word “Assyria” in v. 4 is not translated “nothing” anywhere else in the Bible that I know of. It is normally translated “end” (as it is in v.10) or “ceasing,” thus I think it is referring to the temporary oppression of Assyria which abruptly ceased in Hezekiah’s reign by God’s intervention.

·         And the “wailing/howling” rulers in v. 5 are the Babylonian rulers like Haman in the book of Esther, howling with laughter at Israel’s misfortune. They thought they had beat Israel’s God when they captured her people, so they blasphemed Jehovah. In reality, it is our sin that leads the nations to blaspheme God:
Romans 2:23-24  You… dishonor God by breaking the law.  24  For, as it is written, "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."

1 Peter 1:13-19  “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.  14  As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,  15  but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,  16  since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy."  17  And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,  18  knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,  19  but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.”

“To know the name of the Lord is to lay aside every false opinion and to know Him from His word, which is His true image, and next, from His works.” – John Calvin

How to Respond to His Revelation

7. How fitting are the feet of an announcer upon the mountains,

causing peace to be heard, announcing goodness, causing salvation to be heard, saying to Zion, your God reigns!

8. A voice! Your watchmen lifted up the voice; together they cheered,

for eye with eye they watched while Jehovah restored Zion!

9. Burst out! Cheer together, dry places of Jerusalem,

for Jehovah has comforted His people; He has redeemed Jerusalem!

10. Jehovah has bared the arm of His holiness before the eyes of all the nations,

and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God!

ILLUSTRATION: My younger daughters’ response when my wife and I come home after going out on a date. They watch through the living room bay window and wave excitedly; they run through the house yelling, “Mama and Papa are back!” and they stream out of the house to jump into our arms.

This is the kind of response God wants, too when Jesus comes!

v.7

·         “feet” – synechdoche for whole person.

·         “mountains” – hills around Jerusalem.

·         “fitting” – in the right place, hence beautiful, which is a derivative meaning.

·         This is more than just the announcement of the return from Babylon of the Jews. This is peace, salvation, and the reign of God.

o       Peace – between God and man

o       Goodness
Other passages in Isaiah make it clear that goodness is determined by God’s word
5:20  Woe to those who call evil good and good evil…
39:8  Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, "The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good."

o       Salvation
Matthew 1:21  “you shall call his name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

o       Reign
32:1
Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule in justice.
24:23  Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem...
Rev 11:16-17  And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying, "We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.
Rev 19:6  Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.

Who is this addressed to?

·         “This message is sent to the church [Zion] for it cannot apply to heathens that know not of God. When God speaks, [we] ought to accept the consolation, that, relying on it, [we] may calmly and patiently wait the fulfillment of the promise.” – Calvin

·         And yet, in another sense, the message is proclaimed to those who will by that message come to know God: Romans 10:13-15  For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."  14  But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?  15  And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!"

“Think how beautiful the feet in WWII … occupied France when the American troops marched in. People lined the street and cheered and cheered. Think of how beautiful the feet when the doctor walks out of the operating room and says, ‘Your boy is going to be all right.’ Think of how beautiful the feet when the mailman comes, ‘Here’s a letter from your son who has been missing in action.’ Think of how beautiful the feet when you are in prison but the warden comes to say, ‘Here’s a pardon from the Governor.’ None of these compare to the Good News of salvation, [the] deliverance from the guilt and power of sin... How beautiful the feet! That is what [Isaiah 52] pictures, not just the deliverance from Babylon, but also the deliverance from the doom of hell which we deserve.” –Frank Barker

Chronological Development of “watchmen” v.8

1.      v. 7-8 - Verses 8-9 are actually a compilation of quotes from Psalms 14 and 98, of David, who was writing as a prophet. Here Isaiah predicts that a Messiah would bring peace, goodness, salvation, and the reign of God. Many believe that the “watchmen” of v.8 are the prophets. Delitzsch wrote, “They who saw the redemption from afar and comforted the church… (40:1) rejoicing for they see Jehovah bringing back Zion…”
40:9  “Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, ‘Behold your God!’”

2.      Part of the fulfillment may be in the return of the exiles from Babylon under Nehemiah and Ezra, thus making the watchmen the guards over the physical city of Jerusalem. We need to be careful not to limit the fulfillment to this, as Judaism does, in part, because I doubt there were watchmen in the city before the Jewish exiles returned!

3.      The angels announced a similar message to the shepherds in Luke 2:10, who, as you may remember were “keeping watch over their flocks.” They were “watchmen.” I think that this is the clearest fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy here. The angel announced “good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people, for today in the city of David, a savior has been born who is Christ, the Lord… Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth, goodwill to men.” And then the shepherd/watchmen hurried to Bethlehem and saw Jesus “eye to eye”! Then they went out and told everybody about what they had seen!

4.      The joyful announcement of the shepherds was followed by the preaching of the men whom Jesus, as a grown man, discipled. The dramatic result of this preaching was an unprecedented unified response of faith among both Jews and Gentiles. They would break into singing “together” (v.8&9) and not only Jerusalem but also the “ends of the earth” would see God’s salvation and rejoice in it, such that no longer would God only be called Israel’s God, but Gentiles and Jews together would call Him “our God!” (v.10).

5.      There is still an aspect of this prophecy which is yet to be fulfilled. Jesus is coming again to once-and-for-all bring peace on earth and reign as king, and we are called to be “watchful” for His second coming (Matt. 25:13 – parable of the 10 virgins). And when He come, we will see God “face to face” (I Cor. 13:12)!

It is in this sense of historical development that before Jesus is even born, Isaiah can exhort God’s people to (v.9) “Break forth into singing” in the assurance of God’s comfort and redemption and salvation! It is in this same sense that Isaiah also exhorts us to let loose with rejoicing in the confidence of God’s comfort and redemption even before the reign of Christ is made manifest at the end of time! Are you doing that; can you rejoice now in hope even when things are not all right now?

v.10 two senses of the word “bared” fulfilled in Jesus:

“ends of the earth”

In light of the great truth of our salvation and the coming glory, we are to be announcers of these good things! We can be like my little girls eagerly watching for the return of our first love and excitedly running around saying, “He’s coming! He’s coming!”

Consecration from sin

Isaiah now returns to the theme of vs. 1&2 about what has to be taken off in order to be ready for the coming of Christ. We must put off sin, turn away from it, and live holy lives.

In vs. 11-12, there is an allusion to the Exodus from Egypt, but there are differences.

1.      Now when they leave, it will not be in haste. (This word “haste” is used in the Bible only in the context of the Passover meal).

2.      And now they are not to accept any gifts from the foreigners like they did when they left Egypt.

3.      And this time it is a voluntary departure. The Jews could stay in Babylon if they wanted to, and that’s what most of them did; there was nothing forcing them to return to Jerusalem.

Initial fulfillment of this prophecy has to do with Ezra who recruited priests from among the Babylonian exiles to help him carry back the vessels from God’s temple that Nebuchadnezzar had removed and carried to Babylon. The priests wanted to stay in Babylon, so Ezra had to do some extra recruiting to get enough priests to go with him! There needed to be people who knew God’s word and could minister it among the returning Jews who would set the stage for the coming of Jesus as a baby in Bethlehem.

We can apply this command to us today as we wait for the second coming of Christ. Like the priests of the Old Testament, you are a “bearer of the vessels” of God, for your own body is the temple of God! (I Cor. 6:19). Therefore you must turn away from sin that would defile your body (Mat 5:29-30, I Cor 6:18).

What sins did God have in mind that His people should turn away from?

He lists several following this same verb “to depart/turn away from” in 58:9:

·         “…take away the yoke from your midst,

·         the pointing of the finger [not taking responsibility for your sin, blame-shifting],

·         and speaking wickedness,

·         if you pour yourself out for the hungry

·         and satisfy the desire of the afflicted…”

The verbs in verse 11 are a repetitive, forceful command to be separatistic. Turn away! Turn away; go out from there. Do not touch uncleanliness. Go out from the midst of her! This is not just for O.T. Jews. We are to be “in the world but not of it.” We can’t avoid the malaria-bearing mosquitos if we’re going to be in the world, but we can take action to separate ourselves from the malaria:

Don’t ask, “How much like the world can I be,” but, “How can I be distinct?” Notice, I did not say, “How weird can I be?” Upholding the standards of the Bible as distinctives in your life will necessarily make you different from the world around you, but the goal is to draw the world’s attention to God, not to look odd and draw attention to ourselves.

Peter, in his second letter brings up this same idea of the need for righteous living in light of the second coming of Christ: 2 Peter 3:10-14  “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.  11  Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,  12  waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!  13  But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.  14  Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.”

And so does Paul in 2 Corinthians 6:15-7:1  “What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever?  16  What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.  17  Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you,  18  and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty."  7:1  Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.”

And when you “go out” from the path that the world is walking toward destruction, God promises to walk both before and behind you to protect and keep you! The Hebrew word translated “rear guard” in most English translations literally means “gathering” so I have translated the word “sweep.” In the days when I was a counselor at Camp Briarwood, I liked to take the kids hiking. But before we would venture off into the woods of Alabama, I would set a “point man” to be out in front of everyone else who knew the territory and who could lead the hike. None of the kids were allowed to get in front of him. I would also appoint a “sweep man” to walk at the end of the line of hikers and make sure that stragglers didn’t get lost. This is the picture in v. 12 – God is our “point” and our “sweep!”

Conclusion

‘Twas the night before Jesus came, and all through the house, not a creature was praying - not one in the house. Their Bibles were lain on the shelf without care, in hopes that Jesus would not come there. The children were dressing to crawl into bed, not once ever kneeling or bowing a head, and Mom in her rocker with baby on her lap was watching the late show while I took a nap. When out of the East there arose such a clatter, I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw up the sash! When what to my wondering eyes should appear but angels proclaiming that Jesus was here! With a light like the sun sending forth a bright ray, I knew in a moment this must be The Day! The light of His face made me cover my head. It was Jesus! Returning just like He had said. And though I possessed worldly wisdom and wealth, I cried when I saw Him in spite of myself. In the Book of Life, which He held in His hand, was written the name of every saved man. He spoke not a word as He searched for my name; when He said, “It’s not there,” my head hung in shame. The people whose names had been written with love He gathered to take to His Father above. With those who were ready He rose without a sound, while all the rest were left standing around. I fell to my knees, but it was too late; I had waited too long and thus sealed my fate. I stood and I cried as they rose out of sight; O if only I had been ready tonight! In the words of this poem the meaning is clear; the coming of Jesus is drawing near. There’s only one life, and when comes the last call, we’ll find that the Bible was true after all.

Let us instead sing with Emily Elliott’s Christmas hymn:

“O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for Thee…

And my heart will rejoice, Lord Jesus, when you come and you call for me!”
